Introduction
Our classroom seeks to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. We create and utilize an individualized curriculum program for each of our students to ensure that each child is working at their own pace, receiving the attention and resources they need in order to succeed and feel confident. As teachers, we bring our own interests and passions into the classroom to provide our students with a variety of experiences to educate, honor and serve the whole child.
Curriculum
We begin each day with a morning meeting, individually expressing our hopes and wishes for the day. Then we rotate between gym time and special activities designed by the teachers. The rest of the morning is dedicated to traditional academic learning which includes reading, math, and writing. At noon we have an hour for lunch and free play time. The afternoon is spent focused on specific themes that change monthly, throughout the year. We have two themes that are focused on every year, which are conflict resolution and human sexuality. We have a year long mindfulness curriculum that is embedded throughout our day. We also believe that children learn just as much during free time as during structured class time and so provide them with an additional 30 minutes of free time throughout the day.
We take regular field trips that add to thematic curriculum and connect us with the surrounding community.
